hero-text-and-wreck2If you use a cell phone, chances are you’re aware of “text messaging”—brief messages limited to 160 characters that can be sent or received on all modern mobile phones. Texting, also known as SMS (Short Message Service), is constantly on the rise. Last June, more than 196 billion text messages were sent or received in the US, up nearly 50% from June 2009. Undoubtedly, more than a few of those messages are being sent by people while driving their cars. Is texting while driving a dangerous idea? Let’s conduct a test.

Meet our two guinea pigs: Jordan Brown, 22 and Eddie Alterman, age 37; Fred Austin was the tester.

Previous academic studies conducted in vehicle simulators have shown that texting while driving impairs the driver’s abilities. But as far as we know, no study has been conducted in a real vehicle being driven. The test also compares the results of texting to the effects of drunk driving, done on the same day, with the same two drivers, and under the exact same conditions.  (more...)

SINCE I AM WRITING TO YOU TODAY, THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT HAS NOT ENDED YET!

Viewpoints on today’s meaning for humanity, gathered from various sources of wide-ranging interpretations of the infamous 12/12/12 mathematical sense. 

The Ancient Mayan calendar speaks of 12-12-2012 (or 12-21-12 some say) as the end of times  and the beginning of a new cycle of evolution for planet Earth, humanity and the cosmos. Mayan elders say that the Ancients were informing the modern world to be ready for a giant transformation for the human race. 

Interestingly, traditions across the world including Buddhism, Taoism, Hopi and Vedic knowledge predict a ‘Golden Age’ or ‘Satyug’ (http://thesatyug.blogspot.com/) in their calendars around the same period. December 2012 is being looked upon as a significant spiritual event and a momentous shift in the collective consciousness of the planet, yes dear. 

In Christian teachings, what occurs on the 12-12-12 is the Ascension, and what takes place on December 21, 2012 is the Initial Birthing Solstice of the New Earth. 

Now, brace yourselves for more esoteric points of view. Here we go. 

What happens on December 12, 2012 finalizes the activations and network-connections of all the Master Crystals, Crystalline Fields, Grid Points, Power Nodes, and Vortexial-Portal Sites to the Crysto-Sun Disc and 144 Grid. Don’t ask. 

On the 12-12-12, for the first time, all of these crucial aspects combine, network and tie into the completed 144 Crystalline Grid. At precisely 12:12 pm from the Crystal Vortex, will the ascending energy merge and be tangibly felt. All will tie initially into the Crysto Sun Disc of Pinnacle Mountain located in the largest strata of Crystal on our planet, and then connect to the grid. 

This version of the Ascension or New Earth is the expansion of the planet’s resonance into 12 dimensional fields. It is purposed to expand the Earth and Humanity beyond the 3rd dimension, and burgeon into 12 dimensions. …the 5th thru the 12th of which are in non-polarity, zero point Crystalline Energy and integral oneness. And that is the crystalline frequency. So instead of a banal lunch today, you'll have serenity instead.

Many spiritualists, astrologers, and other people involved in New Age religions or other approaches to spirituality think December 21, 2012 (or December 12, 2012) is going to be a big day. They say that the ancient Mayan calendar's cycle will stop and then restart then, and that something significant will take place. Their predictions range from cataclysmic events to the world being "reborn" Dec. 21, 2012 (or Dec. 12, 2012). 

History is full of failed predictions. 

It's understandable that many people would get caught up with this idea about 12/12/12. Throughout history people have been fascinated (or scared) by predictions about coming cataclysmic events or the end of the World. There have been countless failed predictions, but people either re-interpret what was said ... or they simply forget and look for the next big thing, keeps you going, a little like soap operas. 

Spiritualists and astrologers are not the only ones to get caught up with false predictions about big days. Many Christians thought the first millennium would see the return of Jesus Christ, and again many expected earth-shaking events a few years ago at the second millennium.

 For thousands wanting to tie the knot, it's just the beginning. Ever forget your wedding anniversary, just the single most important day of your life? No more if you hitch today.

For today’s weddings, dozens (pun intended) of scenarios are unfolding across the USA to help people get to the courthouse on time: In Los Angeles, the county clerk's office is expanding hours; in Seattle, many same-sex couples seized the day 12-9-12, the first chance they were legally allowed to get hitched, but others opted to say "I do" on 12-12-12 instead; in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., the really hardcore can get married at 12:12 on 12-12-12, in what the American Academy of Wedding Planners is calling the "wedding event of the century." For $500, you get a marriage license, an individualized wedding ceremony and entrance to a day of festivities.

 Iconic dates have become a wedding trend reaching new heights when over 65,000 couples tied the knot on 07-7-2007. But let's not digress.

 But if you've got cold feet, you can always wait for the next easy-to-remember anniversary, 11-12-13. That date already is being chosen for by many brides-to-be.   

The number 12-12 is one of the combinations that can bring good luck and fortune in China. According to the South China Morning Post, many private doctors were booked today for Cesarean births. The reason is December 12 stands for LOVE, but a greater urgency to have children was felt on 11-11-11 (eternal love) and 10-10-10 (perfection).

 Die-hard fans of the number 12 -- dubbed "dozenalists" (seriously?), say the real time to celebrate is 2016 because they are counting in base 12. The rest of us learn to count in base 10.

 Here is a bit of explanation, although, if bored, you can skip to the last paragraph of this very long story with no harm done. 

 "Decimal year 2016 will be dozenal year 1200, which we're all really looking forward to," says Donald Goodman, president of The Dozenal Society of America.

 Most people in the world count up to 10 like this: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Right?

Goodman, however, counts like this:

 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, X, E, 10, where X and E are single digits, and 10 is the number the rest of us know as twelve.

 You might think that the introduction of two new digits is an unnecessary complication to a system that works perfectly well, but Goodman argues that they make counting and calculating easier.

As president of the Dozenal Society of America (http://www.dozenal.org/), he believes that humanity would be better served if it switched from a base ten, or decimal, system to a base twelve, or dozenal one.

 And today is a good opportunity to get the message out.

 “Dozenals make the beauty of mathematics easier to see and easier to understand, which makes it more likely that people, especially students, will give it the attention it deserves,” he says.

 And he is not alone. For the last four centuries, many eminent mathematicians, philosophers and social reformers have argued exactly the same: counting in twelves makes more sense than counting in tens. Dozenal arithmetic is cleaner and simpler than decimal arithmetic. It all comes down to the fact that twelve can be divided into 2,3,4 and 6, whereas ten can only be divided into 2 and 5.

 Face off: Telling the time using a dozenal clock is simpler, once you get used to the two new digits. This reads "elv dit three", and "onequa elv dit three".

Telling the time is also more intuitive (is it?) using dozenals.

Since five minutes is a twelfth of an hour, instead of saying five past one, we can say "one and a twelfth" hours, or 1;1, where ";" is the dozenal point.

Ten past one is 1;2, a quarter past one is 1;3, twenty past one is 1;4, and so on.

This means that on a dozenal clock face, as illustrated above, both the hour hand and the minute hand point to the precise time. In a decimal clock face, the minute hand inelegantly points to a number that has to be multiplied by five.

[In order to tell the time in smaller intervals than twelfths of an hour, the dozenal system requires a further division into 12. The dozenal minute is 25 seconds, and there are 144 of them in the hour.] Take note.

Some believe a rogue planet called Nibiru will emerge from its hiding place behind the sun and smash into the Earth. Others say a super black hole at the center of the universe will suck in our planet and smash it to pieces. At least two men in China are predicting a world-ending flood. They've both built arks.

Let's not forget the baker’s dozen, where your friendly bread and rolls provider turns 12 into 13.

Baker's dozen means 13, instead of 12. The tale behind its origin as a medieval law which specified the weight of bread loaves, and any baker who supplied less to a customer was in for dire punishment. So bakers would include a thirteenth loaf with each dozen just to be safe. It is said that during good harvests, bakers sold one excess loaf to middlemen. A baker's dozen takes on importance in large families, where that little extra goes a long way.

The hunt will soon be on for the slimy, deadly pythons roaming the Everglades. This week the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced a massive, month-long hunt for Burmese pythons in the state.

 

The 2013 Python Challenge kicks off on January 12 as an initiative to inform the public of the dangerous impact of the tens of thousands of snakes that are threatening endangered species in the national park.

The Python Challenge is held to help reduce the python population in the Everglades. Burmese pythons (Python molurus bivittatus), with their beautifully patterned skin, rapid growth rate, and generally docile disposition, may be best known as the large snake of choice among reptile owners. Unfortunately these potentially huge constrictors are often poorly cared for, and sometimes released into the wild by irresponsible owners, where they adapt and feed in a more natural and organic way. So if you buy one as a pet, keep it home.

Native to the jungles and grassy marshes of Southeast Asia, Burmese pythons are among the largest snakes on Earth (the name comes from the country Burma, also known as Myanmar). They can reach 23 feet in length and weighing up to 200 pounds, with a girth as big as a telephone pole. When young, they will spend much of their time in trees. However, as they mature and their size and weight make tree climbing unwieldy, they transition to mainly ground-level dwelling. They are also excellent swimmers, and can stay submerged for up to 30 minutes before surfacing for air. See why they thrive in the Everglades?

Burmese pythons are carnivores, surviving primarily on small mammals and birds. They have poor eyesight, and stalk prey using chemical receptors in their tongues and heat-sensors along their jaws. They kill by constriction, grasping a victim with their sharp teeth, coiling their bodies around the animal, and squeezing until it suffocates. They have stretchy ligaments in their jaws that allow them to swallow all their food whole.

They are solitary animals and generally only seen together during spring mating. Females lay clutches of up to 100 eggs, which they incubate for two to three months. To keep their eggs warm, they continually contract, or shiver, their muscles.

They prey upon the endangered Key Largo wood rat and rare wood stork in the Everglades. Additionally, researchers say that massive numbers of rabbits, foxes, raccoons, opossums and bobcats have disappeared due to the snakes.

To avoid a complete depletion of the wildlife populations, hunters are invited to apply to join the contest. You must have a valid Florida hunting license and Wildlife Management Area permit to participate, pay a $25 fee and also complete an online training course on safety measures for hunting pythons: see http://myfwc.com/.

 The grand prize of $1,500 will be distributed to the hunter (s) who kills the most pythons. Another reward of $1,000 will go to the person who hunts the longest snake.

 The Commission's 2013 Python Challenge aims to educate the public on how endangered species in the national park are being depleted by the snakes. The contest ends on February 10 and is not just a hunt but a time to inform the public of the impact the snake is having on the natural habitat.

Tens of thousands of Burmese pythons are believed to be living in the Everglades, where they thrive in the warm, humid climate. While many were apparently released by their owners, others may have escaped from pet shops during Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and have been quietly reproducing since.

Burmese pythons can grow to be 26 feet long and reach more than 200 pounds, and they have been known to swallow animals as large as alligators, deers and ...pianos, just kidding. They and other constrictor snakes kill their prey by coiling around it and suffocating their prey.

The National Park Service has counted 1,825 Burmese pythons that have been caught in and around the Everglades National Park since 2000. Among the largest captured so far this year was a 156-pound, 16.4-foot one captured earlier this month.

A study released in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reported that medium-size mammals are down dramatically — as much as 99 percent, in some cases — in areas where pythons and other large, non-native constrictor snakes are known to be lurking.

Scientists fear the pythons could disrupt the food chain and upset the Everglades' environmental balance in ways difficult to predict. The python has become an invasive species, and can live for 20 years.

 The commission is encouraging hunters to use humane measures to execute the snakes. They suggest shooting the snake in the head with a firearm or decapitating it with a machete.

Congress votes to eliminate the word “lunatic” from federal law

You can say lunatic all you want, but you will no longer have the government's blessing: the word will be stricken from federal law under legislation that passed the House on Wednesday, and is now headed to President Barack Obama for his signature - how busy can one get!

The congressional action is the latest effort to remove various language from the U.S. code that has become outdated or demeaning. Two years ago Congress took out references in federal law to the term "mental retardation."

"The term lunatic holds a place in antiquity and should no longer have a prominent place in our U.S. code, " said Rep. Bobby Scott, shortly before the 398-1 vote in the House of Representatives (http://www.house.gov/.)

The word is derived from the Latin word for Moon –lunaticus-  and many ancient beliefs that people could become moonstruck, and therefore insane, by fluctuating lunar movements.

It is usually associated with the odd folk acceptance that if the Moon shone on you while you were asleep, it made you mad – becoming a lunatic.

This is one reason why the old thatched roofs came so far down over the windows, to prevent the Moon from shining on sleeping people.

Philosophers such as Aristotle and Pliny the Elder argued that the full Moon induced insanity in susceptible individuals, believing that the brain, which is mostly water, must be affected by the Moon and its power over the tides, but the Moon's gravity is too slight to affect any single person.

Even today, people insist that admissions to psychiatric hospitals, traffic accidents, homicides or suicides increase during a full Moon, although there is no scientific evidence to support such claims. Ask your wife or sister though, and you may very well get a surprising input on the effects of the full Moon on their (foul) mood each month! a far cry from insanity, but still, an undeniable feeling.

The Wikipedia website says full moons are traditionally associated with temporal insomnia and insanity, but says that studies are generally inconsistent, with some showing a positive effect and others showing a negative effect of a full moon on people.

In a Journal of Affective Disorders article, a hypothesis was suggested that the phase of the Moon may in the past have had an effect on individuals with bipolar disorder by providing light during nights which would otherwise have been dark, and affecting susceptible individuals through the well-known route of sleep deprivation. With the introduction of electric light, this effect would have gone away, as light would be available every night.

The measure passed in the Senate in May, sponsored by Sens. Kent Conrad, and Mike Crapo. “Federal law should reflect the 21st century understanding of mental illness and disease, and the continued use of the pejorative term has no place in the U.S. code,” Conrad said.

The legislation had the backing of mental health groups, including the coalition organization Mental Health Liaison Group, which said that use of outdated and offensive terms such as lunatic only serves to perpetuate the stigmatization against people with mental health conditions.

The EscaRosa Coalition on the Homeless (ECOH) is a collection of agencies and individuals  working together to prevent and eliminate homelessness in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

Currently, ECOH operates as the umbrella organization regulating distribution of federal and state funding to providers working to alleviate homelessness in both counties.

ECOH also hosts a monthly forum for service providers to share concerns and discuss new services; it also helps oversee the Continuum of Care in both counties. The continuum of care model creates a framework for a comprehensive array of shelter and supported services to address varying needs of persons who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
